RxAlly pharmacy alliance shut down
August 26th, 2013
LEESBURG, Va. – RxAlly, an alliance of more than 22,000 independent and regional pharmacies and Walgreen Co., has closed.
The company, launched in February 2012, ceased operations on Friday, according to a statement on its website.
"Just over 18 months ago, RxAlly brought together an unprecedented alliance of pharmacies united to help patients achieve better health through personalized pharmacist care while reducing costs," RxAlly stated. "The RxAlly board of directors has decided to close the company effective August 23, 2013. While we are disappointed in this outcome, we appreciate the progress we made in developing a shared interest in advancing pharmacist care and thank you for your support and belief in our company and our mission."
RxAlly was formed to foster personalized pharmacist care and expand pharmacy services to improve patient health outcomes while reining in medical costs for consumers, employers and payers. The company was led by by Bruce Roberts, former chief executive officer of the National Community Pharmacists Association.
At its launch, the pharmacy alliance's network encompassed thousands of independent drug stores, Walgreens and regional drug chains, including Chain Drug Consortium members Bartell Drugs, Discount Drug Mart, Kerr Drug, Kinney Drugs, Lewis Drug, Navarro Discount Pharmacy, Thrifty White Pharmacy and USA Drug. Other chains joining later on included Doc's Drugs, Drug Emporium, Fruth Pharmacy, Hi-School Pharmacy, Hometown Pharmacy, Lifechek Drug, Osborn Drugs, Reasor's Pharmacy, Sav-Mor Drug Stores and U-Save-It Pharmacy.
Members of RxAlly formed a preferred pharmacy network for a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, called SmartD Rx, that was introduced last fall.
More recently, in late May, RxAlly published a white paper that sketched out an individualized, health care delivery model for pharmacists. The Personalized Pharmacist Care model addressed a range of personally tailored, pharmacist-provided clinical and consultative services to improve patient quality of life and optimize clinical and economic outcomes.
