Shopko pharmacies to be absorbed by new Hometown stores

June 12th, 2013

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Shopko plans to incorporate Shopko Pharmacy locations into five new Shopko Hometown stores opening in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Wyoming.

The general merchandise retailer said late Tuesday that new Shopko Hometown stores are scheduled to open in Afton, Wyoming; St. Peter, Minnesota; and Winneconne, Ellsworth and Tomahawk, Wis., in the late fall. Grand openings are slated for November.

The Shopko Hometown being opened on West Lucas Lane in Ellsworth, Wis., is currently a Shopko Pharmacy site. The company said the existing 32,000-square-foot building will be renovated to accommodate the new Shopko Hometown store.

Plans call for the current Shopko Pharmacy in Winneconne, Wis., to be moved into the new 25,000-square-foot Shopko Hometown store being built just up the road on East Main Street. Meanwhile, the Shopko Pharmacy now on North 4th Street in Tomahawk, Wis., will be moved into the new 35,000-square-foot Shopko Hometown store being constructed on the same street just north of County Road A.

In Minnesota, the Shopko Pharmacy on South Third Street in St. Peter will be relocated to the new 35,000-square-foot Shopko Hometown slated to be opened on Old Minnesota Avenue.

And in Wyoming, the Shopko Pharmacy locations in Afton and Thayne are slated to be moved into the 35,000-square-foot Shopko Hometown store being built at the intersection of U.S. Highway 89 and Doc Perkes Lane in Afton, which will serve the Star Valley area.

The Shopko Hometown format combines pharmacy services with a broad offering of national-brand and private-label apparel, toys, consumer electronics, seasonal items, everyday consumable items, and lawn and garden products in stores ranging from 15,000 to 35,000 square feet.

"We're excited to bring Shopko Hometown to these great communities," Mike Bettiga, interim chief executive officer and chief operating officer at Shopko, said in a statement. "We understand that consumers in smaller towns are looking for the same variety of high-quality goods and trend right merchandise that can be found in larger cities. Customers of our Hometown stores tell us they appreciate the vastly improved shopping experience and access to a broad, differentiated selection of merchandise, including products and brands previously not available in their community."

By the year's end, Shopko expects to have more than 180 Hometown stores.

Overall, the retailer operates over 330 stores in 21 states throughout the Midwest, Mountain, North Central and Pacific Northwest regions. Besides the current 176 Shopko Hometown stores, formats include 134 Shopko stores, 17 Shopko Pharmacy stores and five Shopko Express Rx neighborhood drug store outlets.

In early February, Shopko announced that it had completed remodeling 163 Pamida stores to the Shopko Hometown format. That came just over a year after the two general merchandise chains unveiled their merger deal, which created a chain drug retailer with nearly 300 pharmacy locations in more than 20 states.
