Walgreens sells assets picked up from USA Drug

November 28th, 2012

NEW YORK – Walgreen Co. has agreed to sell SAJ Distributors and the Select Brand private-label line to L&R Distributors Inc.

Walgreens acquired SAJ Distributors in July when it purchased the USA Drug regional drug chain from Stephen L. LaFrance Holdings Inc. and members of the LaFrance family.

L&R said Wednesday that it will operate the current SAJ distribution center and offices in Pine Bluff, Ark., operating under the SAJ name and retaining many SAJ staff who work in customer service, accounting, purchasing and operations. The company added that it also will retain the SAJ sales staff, delivery methods and inventory mix to ensure a "no change," turnkey solution for current SAJ customers.

Plans call for L&R's SAJ Division to introduce, over time, some new items, categories and promotional programs which are in place and available to L&R customers nationwide.

L&R, which also recently acquired UNFI's nonfoods division (previously known as Millbrook), said the SAJ acquisition will layer another 1,000 points of distribution into its client base, continuing the company's growth within the independent grocery channel.

L&R is a national distributor of more than 30,000 health and beauty aids, general merchandise and cosmetics products, serving over 7,000 points of distribution in the supermarket, drug store, independent and mass merchant classes of trade, distributing products from several distribution centers on the east and west coasts.
