Upsher-Smith rolls out Provella women's probiotic
May 7th, 2012
MAPLE GROVE, Minn. – Upsher-Smith Laboratories Inc. has begun shipping Provella, a probiotic dietary supplement for women designed to promote digestive, feminine and immune health.
The pharmaceutical company said Monday that Provella helps restore and maintain the balance of good bacteria to support digestive health and vaginal health.
Taken orally once a day, Provella tablets contain a proprietary blend of six bacteria strains, including lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus plantarum, lactobacillus rhamnosus, lactobacillus fermentum, lactobacillus reuteri and bifidobacterium bifidum, according to Upsher-Smith.
The company noted that Provella's patented controlled-release technology helps protect its good bacteria from stomach acid and is designed to help ensure that active bacteria get to the intestines, where they can begin working. According to The National Institutes of Health, good bacteria that typically reside in the intestines may help the body defend itself against infection and aid digestive health.
Provella is available without a prescription at the pharmacy counter at select pharmacies in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee and at drugstore.com, Upsher-Smith. Consumers can also ask any local pharmacist to order Provella using List Number 0245-1060-30. The supplement is slated to be available nationwide by this summer.
"With the introduction of Provella, we're pleased to offer women a probiotic that contains a unique blend of beneficial bacteria that targets three key areas: digestive, feminine and immune health," stated Wesley Mark Todd, senior director of medical affairs for Upsher-Smith. "As our portfolio of women's products continues to expand, so does our commitment to helping women achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle."
