Activity at Navarro intensifies on several fronts

February 28th, 2011

MIAMI – Navarro Discount Pharmacy is making news with wide-ranging initiatives.

The Miami-area drug chain has begun selling SunPass transponders, it staged a free health fair, and its wholesale subsidiary will provide fulfillment services to 150 independent pharmacies.

Nine days before all-electronic tolls taking effect in Miami-Dade County, officials from Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise and the retailer announced this month that the customers could purchase and activate a SunPass transponder in Navarro stores.

The offering was made possible with the installation of “Touch-n-Buy” machines at 20 Navarro outlets throughout Miami-Dade. The machines also let consumers pay Florida Department of Transportation fines.

“We are excited to offer this unique service for our customers,” said Navarro vice president of marketing Cristy Leon-Rivero.

Earlier, Navarro joined with UHealth-University of Miami Health System, Dade Medical College, Hialeah Hospital and a dozen community partners and health care vendors to host “Love Your Health,” a free health fair kicking off Heart Health Awareness Month in February.

About 200 people attended the event, which featured lifestyle presentations, medical information, product samples and free health screenings. These included body mass index calculations; glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure checks; vascular screenings; and UHealth’s heart risk assessments.

Navarro also announced that its wholesale and export company, Magellan Distribution Solutions LLC, acquired the assets of wholesaler Buxco Inc. and will be providing fulfillment services for a network of 150 independent retail pharmacies.

“Growing our wholesale and export business through Magellan is part of Navarro’s three-year expansion plan,” stated Steve Kaczynski, the retailer’s chief executive officer.

Distributing such signature Navarro products as cosmetics, fragrances and appliances, Magellan’s focus is to identify new business opportunities with local retailers to help them boost their sales, lower their cost of goods and reduce expenses.
