No more confusing or misunderstood retail or health care alliance exists today than the relationship among the CVS drug chain, the Caremark PBM and the MinuteClinic immediate-care network. As the new year begins, retail pharmacy operators are confronted with a host of pressing issues that will affect the measure of success they can achieve as health care providers and business enterprises. Implementation of the Affordable Care Act; the nation’s long-term budget and deficit problems; and the state of the economy, to name just a few, will all play a role in shaping the industry’s prospects. It’s human nature to look ahead to the New Year. What will 2013 hold for America’s biopharmaceutical research sector? Well, quite a bit. By the close of 2012 two key questions regarding the Affordable Care Act were finally addressed: one, whether the health care reform law is constitutional and, two, whether it would be repealed under a new administration. With these two questions now clearly resolved by the Supreme Court and the November elections, respectively, health care stakeholders are now turning their attention to another big question: How will the law be implemented?
