Walgreens bolsters purchasing team

DEERFIELD, Ill. – As part of a series of personnel moves, Walgreen Co. has hired three executives to help lead its purchasing team.

The drug store chain also announced a new role for vice president of purchasing David Van Howe.

Walgreens said two of the new purchasing executives, who will be divisional vice presidents/general merchandise managers, will start at the company this month, and one will start next month.

Eddie Frail has been appointed DVP/GMM of seasonal and general merchandise. Joining Walgreens on June 15, Frail comes to the drug chain after 21 years at Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club. Also coming over from Wal-Mart is Shannon Petree, who was named DVP/GMM of beauty and personal care. She is slated to start at Walgreens on July 13, the company said. 

Due to join Walgreens on June 22 is Maurice Alkemade, who will serve as the drug chain's DVP/GMM of private brands after a 14-year career at Kraft Foods, where he managed the manufacturer's business with Target Stores.

Frail, Petree and Alkemade will report to Bryan Pugh, Walgreens' vice president of merchandising.

In addition, Walgreens said that over the next few months Van Howe will transition to the new position of corporate vice president of new business development within merchandising. He has been with the company since 2000, joining as general merchandise manager of beauty and fashion. 

“We look forward to the contributions and leadership each of these folks will provide to our organization — to help us build on our expertise, share learnings from their retail experience and leverage our strategic know-how,” Walgreens president and chief executive officer Greg Wasson said in a statement.

In other moves, Walgreens has promoted Colin Watts to vice president of new product development and chief innovation officer, reporting to Wasson. Watts joined Walgreens last December as a divisional vice president and president of Walgreens Health and Wellness Platforms.

The retailer also has hired Joe Terrion as chief client officer at its Take Care Health Systems subsidiary. He comes to the company from the Global Travel Group at American Express.
