Former Health Mart chief to join Omnicare

COVINGTON, Ky. – Tim Canning, the former president of Health Mart, has been named senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Omnicare Inc., a provider of pharmaceutical care for the elderly.

Omnicare said Wednesday that Canning is slated to start his new post at the company on June 27.

In the position, Canning will oversee and lead the marketing function companywide plus supervise Omnicare's retail pharmacy operations. He will report directly to John Figueroa, Omnicare's chief executive officer.

"Tim is a world-class executive who has successfully grown a number of health care brands through a passionate approach to meeting the customer's needs and an exceptional marketing aptitude," Figueroa said in a statement. "He will be a very important member of our executive team as we look to rebrand the company and create a unified message in the marketplace to better leverage our industry-leading platform."

Omnicare noted that Canning brings almost 30 years of health care experience to the company. For the past nine years, he served in various executive roles for McKesson Corp., most recently as the president of the health care distributor's Health Mart pharmacy franchise. In that role, he had full operational responsibility for the Health Mart, including the development and implementation of its long-term strategic plan.

Under Canning's oversight, Health Mart saw rapid growth, expanding from 262 stores to 2,800 stores in becoming the nation's fourth-largest drug store chain, according to Omnicare.

He has also served in an executive marketing role for Pharmacia Consumer Healthcare (now Pfizer Consumer Healthcare), as well as in brand management for several products in the Wyeth Consumer Healthcare portfolio (also now Pfizer Consumer Healthcare).

Figueroa is the former president of McKesson U.S. Pharmaceutical. In December, McKesson announced that Brian Tyler, then president of McKesson Medical-Surgical, would take over as McKesson U.S. Pharmaceutical president with Figueroa's appointment as Omnicare CEO.

A Fortune 500 company, Omnicare serves residents in long-term care facilities, chronic care and other settings comprising about 1.4 million beds in 47 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The company said it's the largest U.S. provider of professional pharmacy, related consulting and data management services for skilled nursing, assisted living and other institutional health care providers, as well as for hospice patients in home care and other settings. Its pharmacy services also include specialty pharmacy operations and a range of support services for specialty pharmaceuticals.
