Pharmaca readies new California location

September 30th, 2011

BOULDER, Colo. – Late next month, Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy plans to open its 24th location in Carlsbad, Calif.

Pharmaca, which provides traditional prescription filling services and homeopathic health solutions, said Thursday that the 4,700-square-foot Carlsbad store will open for business on Oct. 22 in a shopping center with a Vons supermarket. The integrative pharmacy chain noted that the new store joins its La Jolla, Calif., location, opened in 2007, as its second store in the area.

The store's team of practitioners will be led by Lisa Hinckley, a licensed acupuncturist, who will work alongside licensed pharmacists and other holistic practitioners, including naturopathic doctors, herbalists and estheticians.

"We're excited to join the Carlsbad community and share the benefits of Pharmaca with more residents in the North County area," Pharmaca president and chief executive officer Mark Panzer said in a statement. "Our distinctive concept provides our customers with an opportunity to manage their own health through traditional pharmacy offerings, holistic treatment options, additional health-focused products, educational resources and a talented licensed practitioner staff."

Pharmaca said the grand opening will start with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 20, hosted by area chamber of commerce and city council members, along with Hinckley and store manager Susan Joslin. That night, the chain will host a VIP Event for local doctors, chamber members, Facebook/Twitter fans, council members and other local VIPs.

The first 100 customers to visit the store when it opens on Saturday, Oct. 22, will receive goodie bags filled with health and beauty samples and can take a free cholesterol test. That weekend, customers also can get free 10-minute chair massages, mini-makeovers and facials. The store will also be offering free gift-with-purchase offers from brands such as Juice Beauty and jane iredale, as well as discounts on Tom's of Maine, Dr. Hauschka and Natural Factors products. Customers, too, can get a Pharmaca-brand body lotion for a penny when they enroll in the Feel Better Rewards loyalty program.

In addition, Pharmaca has partnered with the Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF), which helps support families with children suffering from life-threatening illnesses, to donate 5% of the Carlsbad store's opening-day sales to the charity, whose funds help cover medical costs for needy families, including medical equipment, co-payments, meals, transportation and lodging.

And on Nov. 3, the Carlsbad Pharmaca is scheduled to host the first of its educational events with a lecture by Dr. Michael Murray, a renowned expert in integrative health. The lecture will be the first in the store's Healthy Living Lecture Series and will be followed by a talk on Nov. 10 by Karen Behnke, CEO and founding partner of Juice Beauty skin care.

Besides California, Pharmaca operates pharmacies in Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington.
