Sam's Club serves up series of free health tests

January 4th, 2013

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – To help consumers kick off the new year on a healthful note, Sam's Club is offering five free health screenings.

The Walmart warehouse club chain said Friday that the free health tests, valued at up to $100, include screenings for blood glucose, total cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and vision.

Screenings will be available to members and nonmembers on Jan. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at all 563 Sam's Club locations with a pharmacy. The vision testing will be offered in stores with an optical center.

"The start of a new year provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on the personal changes we want to make and to commit to a healthier lifestyle," Jill Turner-Mitchael, senior vice president of health and wellness at Sam's Club, said in a statement. "By offering free health and vision screenings now, Sam's Club will help our communities assess the current status of their health and set realistic goals for 2013 and beyond."

Sam's Club said it will continue to offer free health screenings every second Saturday of the month through October 2013. Since 2011, the chain has provided more than 2.2 million free health and wellness screenings.

The retailer noted that all Sam's Club pharmacy locations also feature the SoloHealth Station, an interactive health screening kiosk. The station provides tests for vision, blood pressure, weight and BMI as well as a symptom checker and overall health assessment at no charge.

Sam's Club added that it offers health tips for the new year in the January/February 2013 issue of Healthy Living Made Simple Magazine, which the chain said has the highest circulation of any health-focused publication at 8 million. The publication is also available at Sam's Club pharmacy and member services counters and via the chain's website. Members also can visit the website or text SCREEN to 72671 to get monthly reminders about health screenings at nearby Sam's Club locations.
