Albertsons adds to pharmacy base with acquisition
September 10th, 2013
BOISE, Idaho – Albertsons LLC is slated to raise its pharmacy count with its deal to acquire Lubbock, Texas-based United Supermarkets LLC.
Under the agreement, announced Monday, Albertsons plans to acquire 50 supermarkets in north and west Texas under the United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos banners. Together, the United Supermarkets and Market Street chains have 44 in-store pharmacies.
Terms of the transaction weren't disclosed.
AB Acquisition LLC, parent of Albertsons, currently has 1,063 supermarkets and 780 pharmacies in 28 states, consisting of Albertsons LLC with 606 stores in 15 states and New Albertsons Inc. (NAI) with 457 stores in 13 states. NAI was formed in the company's purchase of 877 stores from Supervalu Inc. earlier this year.
With the United Supermarkets acquisition, Albertsons also will pick up seven United Express convenience stores and 26 fuel centers.
In addition, United operates RC Taylor, which distributes tobacco, candy and general merchandise, and Praters, which manufactures prepared foods such as meats, side dishes and fresh tortillas. Another subsidiary, Llano Logistics, operates two distribution centers in Lubbock and Roanoke, Texas.
Plans call for United to operate as a new business unit under Albertsons LLC's company structure.
Albertsons said Robert Taylor, United Supermarkets' chief executive officer, will continue to lead United in his new role of president, reporting directly to Bob Miller, CEO of Albertsons LLC.
Currently, Albertsons has 76 stores in Texas, primarily in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.
