Former Loblaws COO joins Shopko as CEO

November 25th, 2013

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Shopko has named Peter McMahon as its new chief executive officer, taking the reins from interim CEO and chief operating officer Mike Bettiga.

The general merchandise retailer said Monday that McMahon brings a wealth of retail experience to the company, spanning more than 30 years.

"I am delighted to be joining the talented team at Shopko and consider it a privilege to be given this opportunity to lead their top-notch and experienced senior leadership group, as well as a committed and hard-working supporting team, both at headquarters and in the field," McMahon said in a statement. "Shopko has established and is executing a winning strategy to provide a broad general merchandise offering with best-in-class quality retail health services to smaller underserved markets. I'm extremely optimistic about the company's future potential and am eager to get to work."

Most recently, McMahon was COO at Loblaws, Canada's largest food retailer, where he oversaw supply chain, IT, human resources, labor relations, merchandising, store operations and loss prevention functions.

Before Loblaws, McMahon held a variety of senior-level positions with some of the world's largest retailers, including Walmart in Germany and Japan and Tesco in central Europe.

"We are fortunate to have such a successful and distinguished retail executive like Peter McMahon join the Shopko team," stated T. Scott King, senior managing director for Sun Capital Partners Inc., Shopko's parent company. "Peter is highly collaborative and has an outstanding track record of driving results and solving complex business problems. His extensive supply-chain experience will be a tremendous asset as Shopko continues to grow its Shopko Hometown store format which serves smaller, rural markets."

The Shopko Hometown format combines pharmacy services with a broad offering of national-brand and private-label apparel, toys, consumer electronics, seasonal items, everyday consumable items, and lawn and garden products in stores ranging from 15,000 to 35,000 square feet.

Shopko operates almost 350 stores in 22 states, including nearly 300 pharmacy locations, throughout the Midwest, Mountain, North Central and Pacific Northwest regions. Besides the 180 Shopko Hometown stores, formats include 134 Shopko stores, 16 Shopko Pharmacy stores and five Shopko Express Rx neighborhood drug store outlets.
