Walgreens to receive Webby Award for digital coupons

April 30th, 2014

DEERFIELD, Ill. – Walgreen Co. has been named the "Best Integrated Mobile Experience" for its paperless coupons offering in the 18th Annual Webby Awards, which recognize excellence on the Internet.

Walgreens said Wednesday that its paperless coupons enable consumers to easily "clip" digital coupons its Balance Rewards loyalty card. The drug chain noted that such capability enhances the customer experience by allowing shoppers to conveniently consolidate coupon savings.

"Our customers live in a digital world, and providing them with relevant rewards and savings such as paperless coupons is an example of how we make the shopping experience even more convenient," Rich Lesperance, senior director of personalization and CRM at Walgreens, said in a statement. "We are always looking for ways to provide a top-notch customer experience, whether that's through a mobile device, online or in-store. With more than 100 million Balance Rewards members, providing our customers with an easy and convenient way to save while on the go is another example of how we’re helping people get, stay and live well."

Last week, digital promotion specialist Coupons.com Inc. announced that Walgreens is one of the first retailers to deploy its Retailer iQ platform, which the drug chain is using to manage its digital coupon offerings and other omnichannel initiatives.

The retailer's more than 100 million Balance Rewards members can now access paperless coupons and digital receipts and clip digital offers from Walgreens.com/coupons and within the chain's mobile app. Users can redeem offers at point-of-sale by simply swiping their Balance Rewards cards.

"Walgreens' paperless coupons offering has set the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet," stated David-Michel Davies, executive director of the Webby Awards. "This award is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."

Walgreens will be honored at a star-studded ceremony on May 19 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), the Webby Awards are the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. The awards received nearly 12,000 entries from all 50 states and over 60 countries this year. In addition, more than 1.5 million votes were cast by people worldwide for their favorite websites, digital videos and ads, mobile sites and apps, and social media in The Webby People’s Voice Awards.
