WESTPORT, Conn. — The venerable Mylanta antacid and anti-gas liquid has been brought back to store shelves nationwide by Infirst Healthcare USA, a subsidiary of United Kingdom-based Infirst Healthcare Ltd.

Infirst said Tuesday that the “new” Mylanta features an improved taste, extra coating power and new products. The original product, made by Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Pharmaceuticals unit, had exited from the U.S. market in 2010 due to supply issues stemming from recalls. Infirst has reintroduced Mylanta to the market under license from McNeil.

Mylanta Maximum Strength’s classic lemon mint liquid antacid/anti-gas remedy has been updated with a smoother, creamier formulation, according to Infirst. The company said it also has introduced a new flavor to the heartburn and stomach remedy category: vanilla caramel Mylanta.

New products for the brand include the honey chamomile-flavored Mylanta Tonight, designed to alleviate heartburn after dinner, and Mylanta Gas Minis, an extra-strength anti-gas remedy offered in mint and fruit-flavored chewable mini tablets.

“According to recent figures shared by the American College of Gastroenterology, a staggering 60 million American adults experience acid indigestion or heartburn at least once a month, while more than 15 million experience it daily,” stated Jamie Barickman, president of Infirst Healthcare. “A trusted brand by consumers and doctors alike is back and improved to help today’s heartburn sufferers.”

Aimed at providing quick relief from the symptoms of acid indigestion or heartburn, Mylanta is gentle on the body and can be used more often than medicines that reduce stomach acid by altering the body’s digestive system, according to Infirst.

The company noted that Mylanta also is a well-known U.S. brand, with more than 95% consumer awareness, and the name has worked its way into the nation’s pop culture, with the long-running TV sitcom “Full House” popularizing the catchphrase “Oh, Mylanta” as an expression of surprise or stress.

Other products from Infirst Healthcare USA include Infants’ Mylicon, a leading, doctor-recommended remedy for infant gas, and Dr. Cocoa, a line of pediatric cough/cold remedies made with 10% real cocoa.
