ALAMEDA, Calif. — Abbott Diabetes Care is working with the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement officials to recover a stolen shipment of blood glucose monitoring products.
The company said late Friday that one tractor-trailer shipment of blood glucose monitoring products was reported stolen from a shipping carrier facility in Louisville, Ky., on June 19.
Abbott said products in the shipment include certain lots of the FreeStyle Lite Blood Glucose Test Strips, FreeStyle Lancets, Precision Xtra Blood Glucose Test Strips, FreeStyle Blood Glucose Monitoring System Normal Control Solution, FreeStyle Lite Blood Glucose Monitoring System, Precision Xtra Blood B-Ketone Test Strips, FreeStyle Freedom Lite Blood Glucose Monitoring System, MediSense Glucose Control Solutions, UniStick 2 Normal Single-Use Lancing Device, and Precision Xtra Blood Glucose and Ketone Monitoring System
Customers with products in those lots are being advised not to use them. Abbott noted that customers should check the expiration date on their products and look for signs of tampering before opening them, since Abbott Diabetes Care products are packaged in "tamper-evident" boxes that would indicate if a package has been opened. The company added that an unusually low price also may indicate that a product has been stolen.
"Stolen blood glucose monitoring products may be harmful because they may have been stored at the wrong temperature or humidity or other improper conditions, may degrade, become contaminated, or may have been tampered with or handled improperly while outside of the legitimate supply chain," Abbott stated.
Abbott said that if customers obtain test strips from the following four lots — FreeStyle Lite Blood Glucose Test Strips (Part Number 71026-20, Lot Numbers: 1165954, 1166006, 1166016) or Precision Xtra Blood Glucose Test Strips (Part Number 99694-35, Lot Number 45001F526) — they shouldn’t use those test strips and should immediately call Abbott Diabetes Care customer service at (888) 522-5226 to have their test strips replaced free. Almost all test strips from those lots were on the stolen tractor trailer, and the remaining test strips from these lots are in Abbott’s control, the company reported.
