PARSIPPANY, N.J. — Oral care brand Abreva is teaming up with Olympic volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor in a campaign to dispell myths about cold sores.
GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare said Thursday that a new survey, conducted for Abreva by Wakefield Research, found that 63% of Americans can’t correctly distinguish between cold sore myths and facts.
The poll also showed that 68% of Americans prefer faster healing time over the lowest price when they buy a medication. What’s more, 52% of respondents weren’t aware that cold sores experience multiple stages of development before starting to heal, and one in two of those surveyed didn’t know that if left untreated, cold sores can take up to two weeks to heal.
"I’ve gotten cold sores for as long as I can remember, and they always seem to pop up at the worst possible time. And for me, that was right in the middle of the 2012 London Games," stated May-Treanor, a professional beach volleyball player and a three-time Olympic gold medalist. "I have been using Abreva for years, and I stick with it because it heals my cold sores fast."
According to GSK, Abreva is clinically proven to heal cold sores fast and is the No. 1 over-the-counter cold sore treatment recommended by pharmacists. The company said Abreva heals cold sores much like a prescription drug would but without the hassle, penetrating deep to the root of a cold sore and helping to block the spread of the virus to healthy cells.
