Amneal builds end-to-end biosimilars capacity in the U.S.

WASHINGTON — Amneal Pharmaceuticals has completed its acquisition of Kashiv BioSciences, expanding the company’s U.S.-based biosimilars capabilities across research, development, manufacturing and commercialization.

The acquisition adds a 100,000-square-foot research and development and manufacturing facility in Chicago and gives Amneal two facilities totaling more than 150,000 square feet in New Jersey.

The Association for Accessible Medicines said the investment could help strengthen domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing while expanding competition in the biosimilars market.

“Amneal’s investment to expand domestic development and manufacturing of biosimilars in the U.S. directly aligns with the President’s efforts to strengthen our domestic supply chain for critical medicines, and provides lower-cost medicines to Americans,” said John Murphy III, president and CEO of AAM.

Murphy said the acquisition could also help address what AAM calls the “biosimilar void,” referring to a lack of biosimilars currently in development for biologic medicines that are expected to lose patent protection over the next decade.

“This will directly help create competition and lower costs for patients and the overall healthcare ecosystem,” Murphy said.

AAM pointed to Amneal’s expansion as part of broader investment in U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturing among its members. Hikma has announced investments in Ohio and New Jersey, Amphastar is expanding production capacity in California, and Lupin has announced a $250 million investment in a new manufacturing facility in Florida.
