WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association has chosen Thomas E. Menighan, BSPharm, MBA, ScD, as the 2026 recipient of the Remington Honor Medal, the highest individual award in the profession. Menighan will accept the award and present the Remington Lecture at APhA’s 2026 Annual Meeting and Exposition.
APhA executive vice president and CEO Michael D. Hogue said Menighan’s decades of leadership and service have left a lasting mark on pharmacy. “Tom Menighan is a humble leader who would rather uplift others than take credit for himself. That is all the more reason he is the perfect choice for the Remington Honor Medal,” Hogue said. “He has made a significant impact on many aspects of our profession and is well-deserving of this recognition.”
A former APhA CEO and executive vice president from 2009 to 2020, Menighan helped advance major initiatives that expanded the profession’s reach and influence. His tenure included the national push for provider status for pharmacists, the launch of Pharmacy Library, Pharmacy Profiles, and ADVANCE, the expansion of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties, and the creation of the Pharmacy HIT Collaborative. He also led a strategic redesign of APhA’s Washington headquarters.
Menighan previously served as APhA’s senior director of external affairs from 1987 to 1992, where he led public relations, state advocacy, practice management, and new business development.
Beyond his work with APhA, Menighan is assistant dean for community engagement at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy and co-founder of PursueCare and PursueCareRx, which provide pharmacy and behavioral telehealth services for patients in recovery. He chairs the West Virginia Drug Intervention Institute, a nonprofit focused on medication safety education and naloxone access.
His leadership record also includes service with USP, FIP, PQS, and PQA, as well as entrepreneurial roles across community pharmacy, specialty and home infusion, telehealth, supply chain integrity, drug utilization review, and pharmaceutical auditing.
Menighan, a native of Sistersville, W.Va., is a graduate of West Virginia University and Averett College. His work has been recognized with honors, including the Bowl of Hygeia, APhA and FIP fellowships, and honorary doctorates from the University of Charleston and West Virginia University.
Committed to developing future pharmacy leaders, Menighan and his wife, Bonny, established leadership scholarship funds at both APhA and WVU. They reside in Annapolis, Md.
