CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple is expanding the health and fitness capabilities of the Apple Watch and iPhone with a new Health Sensing System, a redesigned Health app and additional tools focused on readiness, longevity and women’s health.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 will introduce new optical and electrical heart sensors designed to provide higher-frequency heart rate and heart rate variability measurements. The devices will also offer a new readiness score that analyzes recent activity, vitals and sleep to help users understand their capacity for activity each day.“At
“At Apple, we believe technology can empower everyone with actionable, science-based insights built with privacy at the core. By combining breakthrough sensing on Apple Watch with Apple Intelligence in the Health app, we’re able to translate complex biometric data into clear guidance for users,” said Sumbul Desai, M.D., Apple’s vice president of Health and Fitness. “This both helps people navigate their day-to-day routines with confidence and connects those moments with deeper context around their longevity, building a strong foundation for a healthier future.”
The company said it will now measure heart rate every five seconds throughout the day, while measuring HRV as often as every five minutes. Apple is also adding HRV to its overnight Vitals experience and introducing daytime vitals monitoring.
The redesigned Health app, which will incorporate Apple Intelligence, will include an Insights tab that delivers personalized health information across heart, sleep, fitness, readiness, vitals, and cycle tracking. A new Longevity tab will analyze longer-term health data and feature Health Age, which compares health metrics to a user’s chronological age. Users can also add lab data, such as A1c and LDL, to provide additional context.
Apple is also expanding the app’s integration with laboratory testing. Users will be able to schedule and purchase a panel covering more than 50 biomarkers for $119 through the Health app at approximately 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations in the United States.
The company is also adding perimenopause and menopause support to Cycle Tracking. Users will be able to log their menopausal status and symptoms, monitor changes over time, and receive notifications about certain cycle deviations. Users age 40 and older may also receive notifications when changes in logged cycle patterns could be suggestive of perimenopause.
The redesigned Health app is expected to be available later this year, initially in U.S. English. watchOS 27 is scheduled to be released on Sept. 14 for compatible Apple Watch models.
