SEATTLE — Bartell Drugs is donating 4,000 doses of flu vaccine to support of pharmacy outreach programs at the University of Washington and Washington State University.
The Seattle-area drug store chain said this week that the donations of 2,000 doses of the current flu vaccine to each school will support student pharmacy outreach programs to underserved communities and students in need.
At the University of Washington School of Pharmacy, the flu shot donation will work toward providing influenza vaccinations to several tribal communities and safety-net nonprofit organizations such as Aloha House, the Salvation Army and drug treatment centers, according to Bartell Drugs.
The vaccines donated to the Washington State University College of Pharmacy, meanwhile, will be used to boost immunization rates among college students in Pullman and Spokane, Wash. This population group is traditionally undervaccinated and vulnerable because its high-density living conditions can foster the spread of communicable diseases, the drug chain noted.
"We’re proud to give the donations to both schools in support of their missions of teaching and community service," George Bartell, chairman and chief executive officer of Bartell Drugs, said in a statement. "We’ve been an advocate of the programs at both schools for many years. This is a way for us to show our support for their on-going outreach efforts to the communities they serve."
Bartell Drugs owns and operates 59 drugs stores in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties in Washington’s Puget Sound area.
