HENDERSON, N.C. — Big Lots! is preparing to celebrate a new chapter in its long history as a national discount chain. The retailer, now owned by Variety Wholesalers, announced a nationwide Grand Opening Celebration that will take place at all stores on October 30, marking its official relaunch just ahead of the holiday shopping season.
The October 30 event follows a four-day Grand Opening Kickoff that began on October 2, offering customers 10% off on storewide purchases, excluding prepaid gift cards. The celebrations come after months of rebuilding the chain and reopening stores following Variety Wholesalers’ acquisition of the Big Lots! brand and 219 store locations earlier this year.
A New Chapter for Big Lots!
Big Lots! has reemerged with expanded assortments, broader categories, and a sharper focus on value. The relaunch underscores Variety Wholesalers’ efforts to restore the brand’s reputation among shoppers who have long associated the chain with low prices and unexpected treasures.
“We’re proud to bring Big Lots! back — better than ever,” said Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers. “Our team has worked hard to restore the value, selection, and experience customers love. We listened to their feedback, expanded our furniture department, and brought back an exciting assortment of seasonal goods at unbeatable prices. We can’t wait to celebrate our grand opening with fun events, surprises, and a Christmas 2025 collection customers are going to love.”
The Grand Opening will also mark the start of Big Lots!’ official holiday push, with new seasonal décor, gifting options, and festive promotions designed to help shoppers “celebrate more and spend less.”
Expanded Assortment, Familiar Value
The revitalized Big Lots! promises a wider range of products across its core categories:
- Furniture: A significantly expanded assortment, including more styles, functions, and price points to appeal to households of all sizes.
- Apparel: A new department for men, women, and children, featuring brand-name clothing at discount prices.
- Seasonal Goods: Holiday décor, gifts, and unique items that have historically been a key draw for customers.
- Essentials and Everyday Finds: Home décor, grocery staples, health and beauty products, and closeout deals on brand-name merchandise.
“Our store teams have been working incredibly hard to get shelves stocked and the doors open,” Seigies added. “We encourage customers who visited when we first reopened to come back and see our expanded selection. Our assortment continues to get better every day.”
Strengthening Variety Wholesalers’ Footprint
For Variety Wholesalers, a family-owned company that operates more than 600 stores across 18 states under brands such as Roses Discount Stores and Roses Express, the Big Lots! acquisition strengthens its position in the discount retail sector. The company’s formula — blending national brands, closeouts, and private-label goods at value prices — aligns with consumer demand for affordability, particularly heading into the holiday season.
By tying the Grand Opening to a seasonal shopping push, Big Lots! is betting it can reestablish customer loyalty and capture a greater share of household spending at a time when many consumers remain price-conscious.
