CAMP HILL, Pa. — To encourage healthy weight loss in the new year, Rite Aid Corp. has launched a sweepstakes with a grand prize of a trip for two to the Biggest Loser Ranch in Los Angeles, where the popular weight-loss reality TV show is filmed.

Rite Aid said Tuesday that for the promotion, which runs now through Jan. 22, it has partnered with BL Body, a line of shape wear available exclusively at its drug stores. The pharmacy chain also is offering free expert advice, online resources and informative guides on weight control.

The sweepstakes is being promoted with in-store radio and a national radio tour featuring Ashley Johnston, the runner-up to season nine of NBC-TV’s "Biggest Loser" who set a show all-time record for most weight loss by a woman. Johnston is also a spokeswoman for the BL Body shape wear collection. The trip to the Biggest Loser Ranch is valued at $4,000, and the second prize — a year’s membership for two to the Biggest Loser Club online weight-loss program — is valued at $479.

Rite Aid said its comprehensive weight-loss program includes free 12-page informational guides in stores or online that feature simple weight loss tips, techniques and topics including how to fight childhood obesity, the importance of counting calories instead of just carbohydrates or fat, and how to exercise on a budget. There’s also free online access to the Rite Weight program that was created by leading medical weight-control program Lindora, which aims to help patients lose up to 10% of their body weight in 10 weeks with free online seminars, weight tracking tools and daily support e-mails.

Other free online weight-loss resources from Rite Aid include an electronic body mass index (BMI) calculator, tools to decipher food labels, recipes and healthy snack suggestions for children. The drug chain, too, is offering free counseling on weight loss from its pharmacists, who are knowledgeable on topics including recent trends in drug therapy for weight management, common dieting myths, and medications used to control weight-related diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis and stroke.

And for members of the wellness+ customer rewards program, Rite Aid is offering discounts and rebates on healthy weight products purchased through Jan. 22. Specials include buy-one-get-one-free offers on vitamins and supplements, meal replacements and fat burners, the retailer said.
