NEW YORK — BJ’s Wholesale Club is making itself a wellness destination for cold and flu season.
The Natick, Mass.-based warehouse club retailer is offering a 20-page coupon book for savings on cold and flu remedies as well as on products that help boost the immune system and help prevent the spread of germs.
Titled "Cold Remedies, Savings Solutions — Stock Up On Essentials At BJ’s," the guide reads "over $102 in coupon savings inside" on its cover. In addition, the booklet offers advice on how to identify symptoms and provides steps on how keep healthy this cold and flu season.
At a BJ’s store in Levittown, N.Y., the coupon book was available on a table displaying an assortment of cold and flu medicines and products designed to aid in prevention. The table was situated adjacent to the checkout area.
Coupons in the book covered both brand-name and private-label items. Featured products included Delsym cough suppressant; Mucinex expectorant and multi-symptom cold remedy; NyQuil and DayQuil; Robitussin, Dimetapp and Theraflu cough/cold remedies; Triaminic and Children’s Advil fever reducers; ChapStick lip balm; Alka-Seltzer Plus cold formula; Abreva cold sore treatment; Halls cough drops; Advil assorted pain reliever/fever reducer products; Zicam RapidMelts cold remedy; Blistex lip ointment; Breathe Right nasal strips; Berkley & Jensen Tussin DM cough formula; One-A-Day vitamins; Nature Made multivitamins; and Berkley & Jensen vitamin C.
An array of coupons also were offered for products to reduce the spread of germs. Those items included Purell hand sanitizer; the Lysol No-Touch Hand Soap System; Lysol disinfecting cleaning wipes; Medline Nitrile exam gloves; Clorox, Pine-Sol, Formula 409 and Lysol cleaners; Scotch-Brite sponges; and Tilex and Lysol bathroom cleaners.
Other products featured but without coupons included Crest Pro-Health oral rinse, the Exergen Temporal Scanner thermometer, Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release gels, Berkley & Jensen hand sanitizer, Nature Made Immuni-C vitamin C drink mix, and Softsoap liquid hand soap.
Five pages in the guide provided advice on staying healthy and treating symptoms, including ways to "battle the bug at home"; a checklist of symptoms to determine if it’s a cold or the flu; essentials of hand hygiene to stop the spread of germs; self-protection measures, such as getting a flu shot; and suggestions to avoid infecting others, such as by covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Consumers also were urged to shop at BJs.com "for more cold and flu season savings."
Though BJ’s clubs don’t have pharmacies, the retailer’s stores often are near chain drug retailers. For example, within a few square miles of the Levittown BJ’s are Walgreens, Rite Aid and CVS drug stores, as well as a Target discount store and Pathmark, Stop & Shop and King Kullen supermarkets, all with pharmacies.
