MADISON, N.J. — Pfizer Consumer Healthcare has rolled out Caltrate Soft Chews, which the company bills as a great-tasting and convenient way to meet the recommended daily intake of vitamin D to maintain bone health.
The company said Tuesday that the new calcium and vitamin D supplement addresses new guidelines from the Institute of Medicine calling for increased daily vitamin D intake for adults up to 70 years of age from 200 to 400 IUs to 600 IUs and for those 71 years and older from 600 IUs to up to 800 IUs. The institute also raised the daily upper intake level of vitamin D considered safe from 2,000 IUs to 4,000 IUs for adults.
Two daily Caltrate Soft Chews provide 1,200 mg of calcium, roughly the same amount found in 17 servings of broccoli, and 800 IU of vitamin D3, about the same amount found in more than six servings of vitamin D-fortified 2% milk or 134 half-cup servings of vanilla ice cream, according to Pfizer.

Caltrate Soft Chews come in Chocolate Truffle and Vanilla Crème flavors and can be taken with or without food, and with just 15 calories per chew, the supplement can fit into most nutrition plans, the companh noted. The product is availabe now at food, drug and mass retail chains nationwide.
