MENDON, N.Y. — Catalina Healthcare has introduced NasalCEASE, an over-the-counter remedy designed to quickly stop nosebleeds.
The company said late last week that NasalCEASE is now available in the first aid section at national chain drug stores such as CVS/pharmacy and at independent pharmacies.
NasalCEASE is easy and painless to use, according to Catalina. Nosebleed sufferers twist the soft fiber material, pack it in the nasal cavity and go on with their activities. As soon as the product comes into contact with blood, its coagulant (calcium alginate) is released and continues to be released until the bleeding has completely stopped.
Catalina reported that calcium alginate can absorb up to 20 times its weight and, as a result, over 90% of nosebleeds can be treated with one NasalCEASE packing. As the product absorbs blood, the sodium in the blood changes the packing from its dry form to a moist mass that won’t stick to new clots. So when NasalCEASE is removed after the recommended 30 minutes, the clots are not torn and there are no rebleeds, the company noted.
Research shows that 30% of all U.S. households have one or more sufferers of frequent nosebleeds, including children and adults, Catalina said. People with recurring nosebleeds who will benefit from NasalCEASE, the company added, include those with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT); those taking blood thinners, including millions taking a baby aspirin daily; allergy sufferers, particularly those taking nasal allergy medications; those with blood-based diseases such as hemophilia and Von Willebrand’s disease; cancer patients being treated by chemotherapy or radiation therapy; and women during pregnancy.
NasalCEASE is sold in boxes containing five sterile packs. Each sterile pack treats one nosebleed. The individual sterile packs can be carried in a purse or pocket, ensuring easy accessibility whenever and wherever a nosebleed should occur.
Catalina said that if a pharmacy does not carry NasalCEASE, it can be ordered from their wholesaler for customer pickup within 24 to 48 hours. Nosebleed sufferers also can request a trial sample of NasalCEASE and $3 in coupons, and health care professionals can request free patient sample kits by visiting nasalcease.com.
