CHPA releases statement on APAP use during pregnancy

“Current research has not established a causal link between acetaminophen use and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.”

WASHINGTON — The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) has issued the following statement regarding acetaminophen use during pregnancy:

“Safety is the top priority for manufacturers of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, and the well-established profile of acetaminophen is supported by decades of research and real-world use. Scientific and medical authorities around the world recognize acetaminophen as the only analgesic considered safe for use during pregnancy when used according to the Drug Facts label, which specifically reminds pregnant women to always consult their healthcare provider before use.

“Current research has not established a causal link between acetaminophen use and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. CHPA supports continued research and promotes consumer education to help ensure safe use of OTC medicines. We encourage consumers to visit the Health In Hand Foundation website HealthInHand.org to learn more about safe use of OTC medicines, including women who are pregnant or nursing.”
