WOONSOCKET, R.I. – This summer, CVS Health and Aetna partnered with community organizations and sports teams nationwide to provide more than 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to students in need.
Hundreds of CVS Health and Aetna employees participated in back-to-school events across communities from Ohio and Seattle to Miami and Hartford. The initiatives were designed to help students and families prepare for the school year and to support CVS Health’s broader commitment to the communities it serves.
In Rhode Island, 100 CVS Health employees packed 1,000 backpacks for local youth. The supplies were distributed by several community organizations, including Connecting for Children & Families, the Hockomock Area YMCA, Empower LGA, Start Anew, Sojourner House, NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley, Federal Hill House, and the Waltham Boys & Girls Club.
In Florida, employees from Aetna, Aetna Better Health of Florida, CVS Pharmacy, and MinuteClinic worked with Branches Inc. to support more than 250 students and family members during the organization’s annual Back-to-School Night in Florida City. The effort included backpacks, school supplies, and hygiene kits.
CVS Health and Aetna Better Health of New Jersey employees also partnered with HOPES Community Action Partnership to pack 500 backpacks. CVS Pharmacy teams prepared an additional 500 backpacks for distribution through the Meals on Wheels program in Ewing, N.J.
In Illinois, CVS Health and Aetna partnered with the Chicago Park District and Chicago Parks Foundation to distribute school supplies through end-of-summer programs. CVS Health also donated backpacks and other items to residents of Grace Manor, an affordable housing development in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, where the company has invested more than $18 million.
The company also partnered with sports partners, including the Washington Spirit and Kansas City Current, to distribute backpacks at South Lake Elementary School in Maryland and through the Ronald McDonald House and the United Way in Kansas City.
CVS Pharmacy separately sponsored a Teacher Supply Drive in Portland, Ore., organized by KPTV-TV in partnership with DonorsChoose. CVS Pharmacy committed $5,000 to the initiative, and community contributions raised more than $59,000, funding more than 125 projects at over 75 schools.
The back-to-school efforts are part of CVS Health’s broader community initiatives, including investments in health care access, affordable housing, and local programs.
