WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Pharmacy is encouraging consumers to review their medicine cabinets, stock up on sick-day essentials and consider vaccination as cold and flu season gets underway.
The retailer outlined five steps households can take to prepare, including checking expiration dates on over-the-counter products, stocking commonly needed supplies, consulting pharmacists about medications, practicing preventive measures, and planning ahead for convenience and cost.
“As families settle into fall routines, it’s a good time to take stock of the health and wellness products already at home, check labels and expiration dates, and fill any gaps before symptoms start,” said Nicole Henry, PharmD, CVS Pharmacy. “Having a few basics ready can help families focus on feeling better rather than making an unexpected trip to the store and make those unexpected sick days easier to manage.”
CVS recommends that households keep pain and fever reducers, cough and congestion products, at-home flu and COVID-19 tests, hydration products, saline nasal spray, tissues, and hand sanitizer on hand. The company also highlighted its assortment of CVS Store Brand OTC products, along with prescription services and other wellness products.
Pharmacists can also help consumers navigate OTC medications, especially when they are taking other medications or have specific health considerations.
“Your pharmacist can help answer questions and identify considerations based on your symptoms, age, other medications and individual health needs,” Henry said. “Even OTC products may interact with other medications, so it is important to read the label and speak with your pharmacist if you are unsure which option is appropriate for you.”
CVS also highlighted flu vaccination as part of seasonal preparation. The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for most people ages 6 months and older. Flu vaccines are available at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations nationwide.
For consumers looking to manage costs, CVS said many of its store-brand wellness products are eligible for FSA and HSA reimbursement, and ExtraCare members can access additional savings. The retailer also offers same-day delivery through CVS.com for customers who prefer to stay home once symptoms develop.
