CVS Pharmacy marks 10 million pounds collected in drug disposal program

More than 4,000 CVS Pharmacy locations across the United States now feature secure medication disposal kiosks.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Pharmacy has reached a significant milestone, collecting over 10 million pounds of unused and expired medications through its safe disposal program since it started in 2017. The initiative, part of the company’s broader effort to promote community safety and environmental responsibility, aims to reduce risks from medication misuse, accidental poisoning, and water contamination.

More than 4,000 CVS Pharmacy locations across the United States now have secure medication disposal kiosks near the pharmacy counter. These kiosks accept prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and small liquid medicine bottles containing less than 4 oz. CVS continues to increase access to these disposal sites by adding new kiosks each year.

In addition to its disposal program, CVS Health promotes education about substance misuse and drug safety through its Dose of Knowledge program, created in partnership with Discovery Education. The program offers educational resources to help young people learn about topics like drug misuse prevention and mental health awareness.

By combining accessible disposal options with educational outreach, CVS Health reinforces its commitment to building safer, healthier communities nationwide.
