CVS to close 270 stores in 2025

The latest round of closures follows the shuttering of 900 CVS stores between 2022 and 2024.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS has confirmed it will close 270 stores across the United States in 2025 as part of a multi-year effort to reshape its retail footprint. The move is part of a broader restructuring initiative that the pharmacy chain first announced in late 2021. The initiative aims to “streamline and simplify the organization” and better align with evolving consumer health needs.

CVS confirmed the closures in a statement sent to NBC Chicago. The company emphasized it is deciding “strategically” which stores to close to “better meet consumers’ health, wellness and pharmacy care needs—not in reaction to industry pressures.”

“Store closure decisions are based on several factors, including population shifts, consumer buying patterns, store and pharmacy density, pharmacy care access, and community health needs,” the statement continued. “We’re focused on ensuring we have the right kinds of stores and the right number of stores in the right locations.”

A spokesperson for the company informed Newsweek that the closures were driven by “population shifts, consumer buying patterns, store and pharmacy density, pharmacy care access, and community health needs.”

“We’re focused on ensuring we have the right kinds of stores and the right number of stores in the right locations,” the spokesperson said. “We’re closing locations strategically to better meet consumers’ health, wellness and pharmacy care needs – as announced more than three years ago – not in reaction to industry pressures.”

The latest round of closures follows the shuttering of 900 CVS stores between 2022 and 2024, with 100 new openings during that same period. In 2025, CVS also plans to open nearly 30 new pharmacy locations, including several inside Target stores, and to introduce smaller-format stores—under 5,000 square feet—with full-service pharmacies and limited over-the-counter offerings.

Though CVS has yet to release a complete list of affected locations for 2025, earlier closures, according to local news reports, included several in the Chicago area and at least one in Pennsylvania, reports Penn Live.

This retail recalibration comes amid ongoing efforts by CVS to shift its business model toward more integrated healthcare services. The company’s strategy includes reducing store density in oversaturated markets while expanding its presence in underserved areas with new, more agile store formats.

CVS has not officially announced which stores will close, but consumer website The Krazy Coupon Lady, citing local news sources, lists the following stores as having either already closed or scheduled to close later this year.
