NEW YORK — People across the country who depend on the drug Ozempic for treating Type-2 diabetes and obesity are having a hard time finding it.
Ozempic helps manage type 2 diabetes — but can also help people lose weight, contributing to the shortage and leaving diabetics scrambling for other options. “We’ve heard reports of people really struggling to fill their prescriptions,” Dr. Robert Gabbay, chief science and medical officer for the American Diabetes Association said.
Diabetics and others are sharing their frustrations with the shortage online — particularly on TikTok, where some creators are getting millions of views and questions on their videos touting the drug for weight loss.
Without medication, people with Type 2 diabetes risk blood sugar spikes that can potentially lead to serious health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease, hearing loss and stroke.
“Even in the short run, people can feel poorly from high blood glucose levels,” Gabbay added.
