Dollar General Foundation awards $4.1 Million for youth literacy

“When students have access to books, technology and educational resources, they gain tools that can support their learning for years to come.”

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is awarding more than $4.1 million in grants to support youth literacy programs at more than 850 schools, libraries and nonprofit organizations across the country.

The grants are expected to benefit approximately 545,000 students and will help recipients strengthen literacy programs and expand access to books, technology, educational tools, equipment and other learning materials.

Awarded near the beginning of each academic year, the foundation’s youth literacy grants are designed to support programs serving students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

“When students have access to books, technology and educational resources, they gain tools that can support their learning for years to come,” said Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. “Through our youth literacy grants, we are honored to help strengthen schools, libraries and nonprofit organizations’ literacy programs and resources.”

Torr added that the foundation is “grateful to support the meaningful work they do to help young learners grow, thrive and pursue brighter academic futures in DG communities nationwide.”

The latest grants extend what has already been a significant year of giving for the foundation. In May, DGLF announced nearly $16 million in grants, the largest one-day grant announcement in its history.

Founded in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded nearly $297 million to literacy programs that have helped more than 26 million people improve their lives through literacy and education.

The foundation was established by former Dollar General chief executive officer Cal Turner Jr. in honor of his grandfather, Dollar General co-founder J.L. Turner, who was functionally illiterate.

DGLF also recently concluded the seventh annual Yellow Glasses Project, a campaign designed to raise awareness and funding for literacy programs. This year’s initiative included a partnership with iHeartRadio personality Bobby Bones, host of the nationally syndicated “The Bobby Bones Show.”

Since its launch in 2020, the Yellow Glasses Project has raised more than $9 million to support the foundation and the literacy programs it funds.

DGLF supports adult, family, youth and summer literacy programs in communities served by Dollar General. A complete list of recipients of the 2026 youth literacy grants is available on the foundation’s website.
