Dollar General picks Donny Lau to succeed Kelly Dilts as Chief Financial Officer

Lau is returning to Dollar General after serving as CFO of Zaxby’s Franchising LLC since July 2023.

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn — Dollar General Corp. has appointed Donny Lau as executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective October 20. He succeeds Kelly Dilts, who will leave the company on August 28. Until Lau assumes the role, chief executive officer Todd Vasos will serve as principal financial officer.

Lau is returning to Dollar General after serving as CFO of Zaxby’s Franchising LLC since July 2023. Before that, he spent more than six years at the discount retailer in finance and strategy roles, including senior vice president of finance and chief strategy officer.

“I am excited to welcome Donny back to Dollar General as our next CFO,” Vasos said in a statement. “Donny’s deep understanding of our business, culture and values and his impressive financial leadership and experience uniquely position him to drive excellence and create long-term shareholder value. I have full confidence in his ability to guide our financial organization forward.”

Lau joined Dollar General in 2017 after holding corporate strategy and investor relations posts at Yum! Brands. Earlier in his career, he worked in investment banking at Morgan Keegan & Co. and Morgan Joseph.

His appointment comes at a time when Dollar General is navigating slowing same-store sales growth and heightened competition in the discount retail sector. Investors are expected to watch closely as the company continues to balance cost management with investments in store expansion and supply chain improvements.

Dilts has served as executive vice president and chief financial officer since May 2023. She joined Dollar General in July 2019 as senior vice president, finance, overseeing financial planning and analysis; procurement; margin planning and analytics; decision science and analytics; and investor relations. Prior to joining the Dollar General, Dilts served as executive vice president and chief financial officer at Francesca’s Holdings Corporation from April 2016 until July 2019.

Dollar General operates more than 20,000 stores in 48 states and is the largest U.S. retailer by store count.
