DoorDash reportedly close to deal to buy Instacart

Acquisition would unite major grocery delivery platforms.

SAN FRANCISCO — DoorDash is reportedly close to a deal to acquire Instacart parent Maplebear Inc.

The Wall Street Journal reported that an acquisition could be announced this week, barring a last-minute breakdown in a deal valued at roughly $17 billion. The newspaper cited sources with knowledge of the negations who spoke on condition that they would not be identified.

Other news outlets have reported that Instacart had recently held talks about selling itself to Uber Technologies Inc.

The acquisition of Instacart would add add a major grocery delivery partner to DoorDash, which began by delivering food from restaurants and has since expanded to also serve major retailers.

Instacart also operates an enterprise business for grocers that contributes a significant share of its total revenue. Many independent grocers have turned to Instacart’s purpose-built technology to manage grocery complexity and to use Instacart’s advertising and data capabilities to grow.
