PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle is offering free diabetes awareness screening events at its pharmacies through early next month.

The food and drug retailer said the screenings, begun earlier this month and running through Feb. 5, include free blood glucose tests and A1C tests plus consultations with a Giant Eagle diabetes and pharmaceutical care specialist trained in an American Pharmacists Association (APhA) program.

In addition, Giant Eagle dietitians and wellness coaches, as well as food and nutrition ambassadors, are available at select locations.

Provided in partnership with Bayer Diabetes Care and Novo Nordisk, the free Giant Eagle diabetes screenings are being offered at all of the supermarket chain’s 200-plus pharmacies.

The screenings extend Giant Eagle Pharmacy’s efforts to make itself a desination for diabetes care.

Over the summer, the retailer started offering five common prescription drugs for type 2 diabetes free to customers in its northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania market areas. And with that move, Giant Eagle announced that it joined the American Diabetes Association’s Stop Diabetes initiative and launched its Diabetes Care Program, a multifaceted initiative to combat the disease.

Overall, Giant Eagle has 166 corporate and 58 independently owned and operated supermarkets in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia and Maryland.
