ARLINGTON, Va. — The Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA) has presented Rep. John Shimkus (R., Ill.) with its Rx Safety and Healthcare Leadership Award.

HDMA said the award honors public officials for their leadership and commitment to policies that support and promote the safe, efficient delivery of life-saving medicines to patients nationwide.

According to the association, Shimkus has been a steady supporter of policies that improve health care supply-chain security and efficiency.

The group said he’s an original co-sponsor of bipartisan legislation (H.R. 905) to correct the treatment of prompt-pay discounts under the Medicare Part B average sales price (ASP) reimbursement metric for prescription drugs and biologics. The measure would enhance patient access to these medications and boost supply-chain efficiencies that distributors provide to the health care system when serving doctors who participate in the Part B program.

"Congressman Shimkus recognizes the critical role of HDMA distributors, who not only deliver life-saving medications safely and efficiently, but save the nation’s health care system $32 billion annually," HDMA president and chief executive officer John Gray said in a statement. "We are pleased to honor him with this award and appreciate his willingness to support legislation that will help enhance patient safety and promote supply chain efficiency."

HDMA noted that the Rx Safety and Healthcare Leadership Award recognizes federal and state public officials who help improve the safety, efficiency and security of the health care and pharmaceutical supply chain as well as support "fair and accurate" reimbursement policies that ensure continuous patient access to medicines at their pharmacy, physician’s office or other health care provider.
