WAUKESHA, Wis. — HRG completed market research and analysis in December 2022 assessing the needs of pre- and post-op patients for transitional care once these patients leave the hospital or ambulatory surgery center to complete rehabilitation at home with a focus on independent pharmacies as the go-to health care professionals to help fill the gap.
Through secondary research, HRG discovered the number of surgeries and types performed and projected to be performed in the United States to understand the current and potential demand. Through primary research with both retail and non-traditional independent pharmacists, HRG learned that 70% know which of their customers are pre- or post-op surgery patients or caregivers, 87% of them are interacting with these customers, and they talk to them about products, home health care needs, and home safety tips in addition to speaking with them about their prescriptions.
HRG will be releasing infographics illustrating more of the results from the research in the coming months, as well as continuing to engage with independent pharmacists to better understand tools and materials that would help them assist pre- and post-op patients and their caregivers as they recover at home.
Angela Nicloy, director of marketing at HRG, said, “There are efforts underway in health care systems to reduce readmissions and there is more that can be done. Independent pharmacists are easily accessible, highly-trusted healthcare professionals that can be integral in minimizing readmissions. This research supports that, and the majority of respondents welcome collateral and other assistance from wholesaler and manufacturer partners that can assist in serving these patients for better health outcomes.”
