WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Hy-Vee, Inc. announced Monday that it will provide 1,000 free anemia screenings in May at select Hy-Vee stores throughout its eight-state region. Hy-Vee is the first retailer in the U.S. to offer anemia screenings to its customers.
Health experts estimate that as many as three million Americans have anemia, a condition where the body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen through the body. The most common form of anemia is iron deficiency anemia, where the body doesn’t get enough iron from food to create healthy cells. People with anemia often experience tiredness, weakness and shortness of breath. A Hy-Vee dietitian will perform a simple finger stick to collect a blood sample to determine your risk for anemia and provide results within minutes.
Registration is required for the free anemia screening and can be done online. Once registered, a local Hy-Vee dietitian will contact you to schedule a screening based on availability. Free anemia screenings are only available while supplies last and are provided in partnership with Sanguina. A list of Hy-Vee locations offering the screening can be found below.
Additionally, Hy-Vee dietitians will offer additional events throughout the month to support customers’ wellness journeys:

Individuals can jumpstart their health journey by scheduling a complimentary discovery session with a Hy-Vee registered dietitian to learn about the different services available and choose the right individual program for their wellness journey.
