BEDFORD, N.H. — Jakemans Inc. has changed its name to Lanes Brands and announced the acquisition of the Smith Bros. cough and throat drops brand.

The U.S. subsidiary of Gloucester, England-based LanesHealth, a maker of a broad range of over-the-counter health and supplement products, Jakemans said the new identity better reflects its product portfolio, which has expanded beyond its core throat and chest lozenges.

Along with cough and throat drops, the product roster of Chicago-based Smith Bros. Co. includes immune support, symptom relief and wellness supplements in tablet, powder, chewable tablet, drop and effervescent tablet forms.

And earlier this year, Jakemans launched GOPO Rosehip with Galactolipids, a joint care supplement, in the U.S. market.

“LanesHealth has had good success in helping heritage brands regain market share and appeal to consumers looking for tried and true products to treat common ailments,” stated Jonathan Groves, president of Lanes Brands and great grandson of the founder of LanesHealth.  “We believe Smith Bros. fits nicely with our Jakemans Throat & Chest Lozenges as an alternative for consumers seeking relief in products that have been proven to work for generations.”

LanesHealth manufactures and markets such brands as Olbas, Kalms, Quiet Life and Jakemans Throat & Chest Lozenges. Founded in the 1930s by Gilbert Lane, an early supporter of the idea of improving health through diet and the use of carefully selected plants and nutrients, the company has been operating as Jakemans Inc. in the United States since 2010.

“We wanted to build on our 80-year heritage as a leading manufacturer of dietary supplements, herbal remedies and other medicines in the U.K.,” Groves added.
