LONGUEUIL, Quebec — The Jean Coutu Group has unveiled in Beloeil, Quebec, its first “green” store, built according to what the retailer says are environmental protection standards.

Coutu invested $4 million (Canadian) to complete the project, in which the 14,000-square-foot pharmacy is designed according to the latest Coutu concept.

Environmental measures adopted to build the store are aimed at protecting air quality by using low-emission materials (eco-source paint); reducing energy consumption by using additional insulating material for the walls and roof and installing high-efficiency air conditioning units and a lighting system that features automatic on-and-off light controls (motion detectors); and introducing water conservation sanitation facilities.

“We are happy to integrate to our network of pharmacies an establishment designed to reflect the vision of the Jean Coutu Group and to meet the needs of our customers while reducing the impact of the building on the environment,” states president and chief executive officer François Coutu.
