GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. — Kinney Drugs has partnered with local health programs to help uninsured customers obtain free cancer screenings and later this month plans to open its 91st store.
The drug chain said it’s aligning with the Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties Cancer Services Programs in upstate New York to educate uninsured residents on how to get the free cancer screenings. Age-appropriate breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening is available for eligible men and women.
Program staff will be on site at eight Kinney stores the week of March 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to discuss eligibility on how to get a free screening. The effort includes the retailer’s Boonville, Camden, Chittenango, Clinton, Ilion, Little Falls, Old Forge and Whitesboro, N.Y., locations.
"The goal is to increase awareness of the free cancer screenings available to men and women who meet criteria set forth by the Cancer Service Program. We want the people in our communities to know how important it is to be screened for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer and to understand how early detection can save lives," commented Kinney marketing manager Penny Perrone-Gray.
On March 27, Kinney is scheduled to hold the grand opening of its new store on South Main Street in Waterbury, Vt., the site of a former Vincent Drugs store, according to the company.
The store will offer free prescription delivery, EZ Refill phone-in or online refill services, and free Life Vials, which contain a person’s key medical information in the event of an emergency. As part of the grand opening event, free blood pressure screenings will be offered in tandem with the Central Vermont Medical Center.
Kinney added that the store has been remodeled to accommodate its expanded health care, personal care, cosmetics and beauty care lines, as well as convenience food and beverages.
Including the new unit, the chain operates 16 stores in Vermont and 75 stores in central and northern New York.
