CINCINNATI — Kroger has partnered with bitewell to roll out the FoodHealth Score, a new nutrition scoring system designed to make it easier for the retailer's customers to make healthy food choices. Accessible through Kroger’s app and website, the FoodHealth Score rates foods from 1 to 100, factoring in nutrient density and ingredient quality to help customers make better choices for themselves and their families.

The scoring tool, which Kroger customers can use both online and in-store by scanning product UPC codes, provides a straightforward number to gauge a food’s nutritional value. With a digital account, customers can also review past purchases and receive a personalized analysis of their shopping habits through Kroger’s “Nutrition Insights” feature.

"Kroger and bitewell are united in our desire to improve the nutrition security of millions of people,” said Jim Kirby, chief commercial officer at Kroger Health. “With this expanded service, Kroger and bitewell are setting a new standard for nutrition transparency, empowering customers to gradually change the way they eat.”

Kroger’s OptUP program, first launched in 2017, introduced a color-coded guide to assist shoppers in identifying healthier options. The new FoodHealth Score builds on this foundation, delivering a more advanced scoring system that draws on bitewell’s expertise in nutrition science. Laura Brown, head of nutrition at Kroger, emphasized the value of the new partnership: “This improved resource will help us deliver better access and information to our customers, hopefully leading to improved health outcomes.”

Samantha Citro-Alexander, CEO of bitewell, also shared her enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We’ve all been there — standing in front of an aisle wondering, ‘which of these is actually healthy for me?’ The FoodHealth Score makes it fast and easy to answer that question.”

Kroger’s latest innovation aims to simplify nutrition for busy customers, making it easier to make healthy choices while shopping.
