PITTSBURGH — Mylan Inc. has released acyclovir ointment 5%, an antiviral medication for the treatment of herpes.
The company said Wednesday that its product is is the first generic version of Valeant Pharmaceuticals’ Zovirax Ointment.
Acyclovir ointment is indicated in the management of initial genital herpes and in limited, non-life-threatening mucocutaneous herpes simplex virus infections in immunocompromised patients, according to Mylan.
The medication had U.S. sales of about $230 million for the 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2012, according to IMS Health figures reported by Mylan.
