MIAMI — Expanding its reach, Navarro Discount Pharmacy plans to open its 29th store this summer.

The Miami-area drug store chain said Tuesday that it has signed a lease for a new 14,000-square-foot location in North Miami, which will mark the retailer’s first new store opening since its airport store opened in 2007.

"Expanding into North Miami is part of our three-year growth plan, which includes adding new store locations and remodeling existing locations," Navarro chief executive officer Steve Kaczynski said in a statement. "Being in North Miami will allow us to reach out to introduce our successful community pharmacy and discount model to additional ethnic groups and expand our loyal customer base."

The growth plan includes adding as many as 22 new store locations in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties over the next three years, as well as remodeling up to five existing store locations annually, according to Paul DiBrito, director of real estate and construction for Navarro. Three current stores, including in Hialeah Gardens, Fla., were already remodeled in the last 12 months.

New store and existing store renovations include new merchandise layout, new colors, enhanced signage and improved services, such as a pediatric pharmacy for busy parents, free compounding, a free diabetes club for adults and children, and free prescription delivery.

Navarro added that other parts of its growth strategy include identifying new wholesale partnerships and business development opportunities as well as adding e-commerce capabilities to its web site for the growing Hispanic population outside South Florida.
