SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Under the new health care reform law, the National Committee on Vital Health Statistics (NCVHS) has recommended the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) to be formally named as an operating rules entity for retail pharmacy-related eligibility transactions.
NCPDP said Wednesday that NCVHS made the recommendation, which fulfills the criteria established in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590), in a recent letter to Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
In addition, NCVHS recommended CAQH CORE as the authoring entity for operating rules for nonretail pharmacy-related eligibility and claim status transactions, the council reported.
"We are pleased to be recommended by NCVHS as an operating rules entity," Lee Ann Stember, president of NCPDP, said in a statement. "It’s powerful validation of the success of our model for collaboration and consensus and the overwhelmingly positive impact our organization has had on improving efficiencies, safety and patient care quality for over three decades."
NCPDP is an ANSI-accredited standards development organization with more than 1,500 members, representing virtually every sector of the pharmacy services industry. The group noted that it promotes openness, consensus and collaboration among health care and pharmacy stakeholders.
Also, NCPDP collaborates with other organizations and is an active participant in the Designated Standards Maintenance Organizations (DSMO). The council’s standards have been named in HIPAA, MMA and Meaningful Use Requirements.
