RICHMOND, Texas — OCuSOFT Inc. has rolled out its Zytaze prescription supplement to retail pharmacies.

The company said Thursday that chain drug retailers carrying Zytaze include Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, Duane Reade and Walmart.

OCuSOFT describes Zytaze as a prescription-only "medical food" designed to provide nutritional support to enhance the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injections (such as Botox, Dysport and Myobloc) in the treatment of blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm or cosmetic procedures.

A blepharospasm is an abnormal, involuntary contraction or twitch of the eyelid, while a hemifacial spasm is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by frequent involuntary contractions of the muscles on one side of the face.

Formulated with a proprietary, patent-pending blend of highly bioavailable, organic zinc and phytase — an enzyme that effectively breaks down phytates and maximizes zinc absorption — Zytaze has been reported to extend the duration of botulinum toxin treatments by almost 25%, according to OCuSOFT. Each capsule contains zinc citrate 25 mg and phytase 1500 mg.

For many patients, Zytaze could mean using less toxin, financial savings, greater safety and better, more consistent botulinum toxin results, OCuSOFT noted.
