CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid Corp. has launched Rite Aid Online Care, a new service that enables patients with chronic conditions to engage in live, interactive consultations with specially trained Rite Aid pharmacists via the Internet.

Patients can access Rite Aid Online Care, unveiled earlier this month at the American Diabetes Association Expo in Pittsburgh, from their home or workplace and at 10 Rite Aid stores in the Pittsburgh area.

At the pharmacies, patients go into a private consultation room and connect via computer with a pharmacist specializing in a chronic disease such as diabetes. Patients using Rite Aid Online Care at a pharmacy or those with a webcam linked to their computer will be able to see the pharmacist face to face.

The consultations can include a review of medications taken, the benefits of following prescribed regimens, and insights into drug side effects and interactions. Patients with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and cancer can get advice on how to manage their medications. Patients also can ask questions about over-the-counter medicines.

The service is powered by American Well, an online health care solution provider. Rite Aid had said in late April that it was testing live online consultations with its pharmacists using American Well’s Online Care solution and planned to offer such a service.

Rite Aid said at the time that it was the nation’s first drug chain to offer the American Well service to patients.
