ALLEGAN, Mich. — Perrigo Co. has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to market and distribute infant formula containg 100% partially hydrolyzed whey protein.

The company said Tuesday that the private-brand Comfort Care Infant Formula is designed for babies with fussiness or gas and will be sold next year as a nutritionally comparable version of Gerber Good Start Gentle Infant Formula at leading retailers.

According to Perrigo, the store-brand Comfort Care formula is easy to digest and contains prebiotics to support a baby’s natural immune system plus DHA and ARA to support brain and eye development.

Sales of the national brand are estimated at $55 million for the latest 52 weeks, according to Symphony/IRI Group figures cited by Perrigo.

"Perrigo is pleased to receive clearance from the FDA to market a national-brand equivalent of one of the best-selling infant formula brands in the United States," stated Perrigo chairman and chief executive officer Joseph Papa. "Our presence in the infant formula market is growing as we continue to offer high-quality nutritional products like Comfort Care Infant Formula to parents that support healthy growth and development while meeting the same nutritional and safety standards as the national brand."
