ALLEGAN, Mich. — Perrigo Co. has launched clobetasol emulsion propionate foam 0.05%, a treatment for dermatosis of the scalp.

The company said Friday that the product is a generic equivalent of Stiefel Laboratories’ Olux-E Foam (0.05%).

Perrigo noted that since it was the first filer for an Olux-E generic, it has 180 days of generic exclusivity. The company said the launch date was agreed on in a 2012 litigation settlement with GlaxoSmithKline, Stiefel’s parent.

Clobetasol emulsion propionate foam is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe dermatosis of the scalp. Generic annual sales were about $38 million, according to Symphony Health Solutions data cited by Perrigo.

"This is the second product launched since the acquisition of Cobrek, and it’s another example of our Rx team’s commitment to launching difficult-to-manufacture products," Perrigo president and chief executive officer Joseph Papa stated.

In other news Friday, Perrigo said it plans to acquire Velcera Inc., a maker of pet health care products, for $160 million in cash.

Velcera’s products, including the PetArmor flea and tick products, are available at major retailers nationwide. Perrigo said Yardley, Pa.-based Velcera has been integral in developing an over-the-counter market for pet health products traditionally dispensed only by veterinarians.

In addition, Velcera marks Perrigo’s second acquisition over the past several months in the emerging OTC animal health care market. Perrigo bought Sergeant’s Pet Care Products Inc. last fall.

"We are very pleased to take this next step in expanding our companion animal health care business," Papa commented. "Velcera’s product mix represents a natural extension to the Sergeant’s portfolio we acquired last October. The PetArmor franchise will accelerate our strategy to deliver compelling value to both our retail customers and American consumers. Additionally, we see an excellent opportunity to leverage our existing commercial, manufacturing and distribution capabilities, and our customer base, as we aim to make quality, affordable pet care products available to consumers everywhere."
