Pharmacy groups ready for Tweet-a-Thon

This week, members of 37 pharmacy organizations from around the world are going on Twitter to participate in the second annual #Pharmacist Tweet-a-Thon.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — This week, members of 37 pharmacy organizations from around the world are going on Twitter to participate in the second annual #Pharmacist Tweet-a-Thon.

The National Community Pharmacists Association said the Tweet-a-Thon event, to be held Thursday, aims to highlight the positive impact that pharmacists have on their patients, communities and the health care sector overall.

On Oct. 2, pharmacists across the globe will use the hashtag #Pharmacist to tweet about the actions they have taken or are taking to help patients, doctors, other health care providers and their communities.

Last October, NCPA noted, more than 7,100 tweets with the hashtag #Pharmacist were sent during the inaugural Tweet-a-Thon, and #Pharmacist was the No. 1 trending health care hashtag that day.

"Last year, we saw tweets from all over the world describing the impact that pharmacists have on their patients’ everyday lives. From preventing potentially adverse reactions, to teaching newly diagnosed diabetic patients how to use their glucose monitor, to administering 40 flu shots in three hours, last year’s stories were diverse and inspiring," NCPA said in a statement on behalf of the participating organizations. "Pharmacists in different practice settings not only fill prescriptions, they counsel patients, consult with physicians, lower health care costs and help patients live healthier lifestyles. As one of the most accessible health care providers, pharmacists have a unique story to tell, and we hope they will take a moment or two on Oct. 2 to share their positive stories on Twitter."

Along with NCPA (@commpharmacy), pharmacy organizations slated to partake in this year’s Tweet-a-Thon include the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (@AACPharmacy), American College of Apothecaries (@ACA_Info), American Pharmacists Association (@pharmacists), American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (@ASCPharm), International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (@iacprx), National Association of Chain Drug Stores (@NACDS), National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (@StatePharmacy), Pharmacy HIT Collaborative (@pharmacyHIT) Canadian Pharmacists Association (@CPhAAPhC), Irish Pharmacy Union (@IrishPharmacy), Pharmacy Guild of New Zealand (@PharmacyGuildNZ) and Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (@The_SHPA).

Also due to participate are 24 state pharmacy organizations.
